Fontrfroide Abbey

Narbonne

Details of the activity

Founded in 1093 by a few Benedictine monks, Fontfroide joined the Order of Cîteaux in 1145 and quickly became one of the most powerful Cistercian abbeys in Christendom. The abbey is located in the heart of the Massif de Fontfroide made up of 4000 hectares of unspoiled nature. Bathed by the Fontfroide stream, this sumptuous Cistercian ensemble from the 12th and 13th centuries. is nestled in the heart of a typically Mediterranean landscape. During the Crusade against the Albigenses, it asserted itself as a bastion of Catholic orthodoxy in the face of Catharism. After the last departure of the monks in 1901, Gustave and Madeleine Fayet bought it in 1908, restored it and embellished it. Inside, the terraced gardens set on the hills are open to visitors. They are labeled Remarkable Gardens and LPO refuge. The abbey can be visited in a guided or free way, equipped with a digital tablet for all. July and August, interactive night tour from Tuesday to Friday at 10 p.m.
