Château Laurens

In Agde

Set in a verdant setting at the entrance to Cap d’Agde, the Musée de l’Ephèbe and Museum of Underwater Archaeology showcases the rich heritage of Agde. Its exceptional collections are the result of 50 years of discoveries in the River Hérault, the sea, and the Thau Lagoon, bearing witness to Agde’s economic activity over the centuries.

For Agathé, a 2,600-year-old Greek city and crossroads of civilisations, has revealed true sunken treasures: cargoes of pottery, weaponry from the Royal Navy, maritime transport of amphorae and raw materials, trade in works of art… including the famous statue of Alexander of Agde, known as "the Ephebe" – the only Hellenistic bronze ever found in French waters.

Etruscans, Greeks, Romans, Celts, Visigoths, Saracens, Vikings, Spaniards, and Italians – all have left their mark on the history of Agathé.
